A beautiful and profound song, Pie Jesu, sung here by Hayley Westerna. The song’s lyrics and translation is listed under the video, with my alternative in parenthesis.
Pie Jesu, Pie Jesu, Pie Jesu, Pie Jesu, Qui tollis peccata mundi; Dona eis requiem, Dona eis requiem. Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei, |
Lord, have mercy, (or Kind/Sweet Lord Jesus) Lord, have mercy, You who take away the sins of the world; Grant them peace, (or Grant them rest) Grant them peace. Lamb of God, Lamb of God, |

In a related post, Dies Irae, a traditional song of intercession for those who have died.
Enjoy them both!
This is the first day of Catholic Schools Week. Hearing Pie Jesu and Dies Irae reminds me of the excellent training I had in my Catholic elementary school choir. We learned to sing Latin hymns and the Latin Mass parts. The school I attended is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and I’m so grateful for having been a part of it. My parents, aunts, uncles, siblings and cousins went there, too.
This is one of my favorite songs, but I have never known its title! Thank you thank you thank you!
