Veni Sancte Spiritus – Sequence

As we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, the words of the Sequence are a worthy reflection (translation follows video):

–+–

COME, Thou holy Paraclete,
and from thy celestial seat
send thy light and brilliancy:

Father of the poor, draw near;
giver of all gifts, be here;
come, the soul’s true radiancy.

Come, of comforters the best,
of the soul the sweetest guest,
come in toil refreshingly.

Thou in labor rest most sweet,
thou art shadow from the heat,
comfort in adversity.

O thou Light, most pure and blest,
shine within the inmost breast
of thy faithful company.

Where thou art not, man hath nought;
every holy deed and thought
comes from thy Divinity.

What is soiled, makes thou pure,
what is parched, thy dew out-pour,
what is wounded, work its cure.

What is rigid, gently bend;
what is frozen, warmly tend;
strengthen what goes erringly.

Fill thy faithful who confide
in thy power to guard and guide,
with thy sevenfold mystery.

Here thy grace and virtue send;
grant salvation in the end,
and in heaven felicity.

Amen. Alleluia.

Prayer for Pentecost

“When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled,
they were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky
a noise like a strong driving wind…”

Acts of the Apostles 2:1-2

The wind is blowing today.
A slight breeze,
a breathe of fresh air.
The Holy Spirit comes anew
on this Solemnity of Pentecost.

Can you feel it?

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are free for the asking for all who are properly disposed to receive them.

Veni Sancte Spiritus!
Come Holy Spirit!

___

Send down your gifts abundantly and overflowing.

Your gifts of Wisdom and Understanding.

Your gifts of Fortitude and Fear of the Lord.

Your gifts of Piety, Counsel and Knowledge.

Teach us to use these gifts prudently, that good fruit may be apparent in our lives – through our thoughts, words and deeds – that others may learn of you through us. Come, Spirit of Grace, Come!
